Biodegradable, compostable, oxo-degradable…
With all the ‘clean’ marketing and PR buzzwords out there, it’s tough to know the truth. We’re breaking it down into simple terms, so you can make educated decisions:
Biodegradable materials can be broken down by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae. The organisms consume these materials completely and convert them into water, gasses, minerals, and new biomass over time. This process does not leave behind microplastics.
Similar to biodegradable materials, compostable matter is broken down by microorganisms. However, a material is only considered compostable if it a) enhances the nutritious quality of the soil, b) does not introduce toxicity, and c) breaks down within 12 weeks.
Oxo-degradable products use heat, sunlight, and moisture to break down into microplastics. There is no current proof that these microplastics will be further consumed by microorganisms. In fact, they often create more problems for animals and the environment.
All compostable material is biodegradable. Not all biodegradable material is compostable. Degradable material does not equal biodegradable material.
